Paper Idol is the brainchild of Matan KG, former Wesleyan University neuroscience student. It all started in 2016 as a college dance-punk project with a ragtag rotating band, leaving Matan studying by day and collecting noise complaints by night. Inspired by nu-disco as much as art pop and indie rock, Paper Idol offers a rare combination of new-school production and old-school vibes, and has been championed by tastemaker publications Under the Radar, Billboard, Buzzbands.la, Dancing Astronaut, and many more.
In 2019, Paper Idol teamed up with Lowly records to released the blog-haus-inspired “Feel Real Pretty” which received steady airplay on Los Angeles’s KCRW, placements in CW’s Nancy Drew, and support from major Spotify & Apple Music editorial playlists. His collaboration with future-funk producer Yung Bae on “Up All Night,” was featured on Billboard’s New Music Friday and received considerable streaming support. This year, Paper Idol teamed up with German House legend Wankelmut to create the soulful deep-house track "Only You," released on Spinnin' records and debuted on BBC Radio 1's Future Dance show.
The project performs live as a hybrid electronic band featuring Adam Rochelle (Keys) and Victor Singer (Drums), all wearing their signature white jumpsuits. Paper Idol has performed in legendary venues including The Fonda Theater and The Echo, completed a full west-coast tourt, and opened for big names in electronic music, including Sam Gellaitry and Louis Futon.
